Are there any tests that my child must take prior to starting the Valdés Institute?

All Valdés students are required to take a placement test in order to determine enrollment in the appropriate summer course. Once the online registration application has been received, the parent or guardian will be contacted by the Institute as to the specific time, date, and location of the Enrichment testing.  A student cannot "fail" these tests.  They are for placement purposes only.

Note: The 2019 Enrichment Testing Fee is $100.  This is a non-refundable fee and will be applied toward the overall tuition charge for the 2019 Valdés Math Institute class.

How much does it cost to participate in an Enrichment class?

The total cost for participating this summer is $1200. This includes the $100 testing fee to determine correct course placement. Upon acceptance in to the Summer Institute, a balance of $1100 will be due in order to hold the spot. Payments may be made online via Paypal or credit card. See our 'Payments' page for more information.

What classes are offered as part of the Valdés Institute?

With the exception of Math Analysis/PreCalculus, all of our summer Enrichment classes are based on the current Common-Core model. Integrated Math 1 through Math Analysis/Precalculus follow an approved UC a-g curriculum.

The classes listed below will be offered dependent on the total number of students who qualify for initial summer placement.

  • Introduction to Algebra/CC 8th-Grade Math
  • CCSS Integrated Math 1
  • CCSS Integrated Math 2
  • CCSS Integrated Math 3
  • Math Analysis/PreCalculus

This chart shows the distribution of strands in a traditional Common Core pathway (fig.1) and an Integrated pathway (fig. 2).

In keeping with most of our local school districts, the Valdés Math Institute has adopted an Integrated Math pathway (fig. 2).

Will my child receive credit for classes taken?

That depends on your school or district.  We will send information on the class attended, grade received, and recommended class to your child's school or district.  It is up to you to follow through on placement.  We will assist if asked.

For middle schools, most of our recommendations have been accepted for class placement.  Awarding credit is based on the internal policy of the district or school.

If you are looking to take an Enrichment course for high-school credit, then please check with your current high-school counselor to determine how our summer course will be credited as part of your overall academic transcript.

ESUHSD and most local districts have accepted our course recommendations in the past and awarded credit to students who received such recommendations from us.  For example, all ESUHSD students are now placed in the next math class level following the district sequence/pathway shown below:
